NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Amazon pledged to stop selling illegal license plate covers that block toll readers and traffic cameras to New York State residents, Mayor Eric Adams’ office announced on Thursday.

New York City Council passed a law last year banning the sale of the devices, which use tinted plastic that makes the license plates unreadable to the cameras.

“We strive every day to ensure a trustworthy experience for our customers,” said Amazon’s director of New York public policy Jennifer Cruickshank. “We are proud to collaborate with Mayor Adams and support his efforts to keep tinted and smokescreen license plate covers from being sold in New York.”

Amazon will also include a warning to anyone buying a plate cover in other parts of the country that the devices are illegal in New York.

Adams lauded the company as a model for other vendors who, according to him, have largely ignored the ban.

“Today, we are sending a clear and simple message: We will leave no stone unturned to keep New Yorkers safe on our streets,” said Adams. “Ghost cars are by design unsafe and untraceable, so in addition to finding and towing them, we’re going to stop them from appearing in the first place. Amazon has been a willing partner in the battle for street safety and we thank them for working with us to keep New York City streets safe. We expect all e-commerce platforms and other sellers to follow their lead, comply with the law, and keep these products out of New York.”

The city’s deal with Amazon is part of a crackdown on so-called “ghost cars” that Adams and the NYPD launched in early July.

The police have arrested over 2,700 motorists so far for driving with forged license plates in 2022 so far. The NYPD has also towed almost 2,000 vehicles with obstructed or illegal plates this year.
