NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration has hired a well-known criminal defense lawyer to handle matters related to COVID-19 deaths in New York state's nursing homes, according to a report.

Former federal prosecutor Elkan Abramowitz is representing Cuomo and his current aides "in Justice Department inquiries about the state’s nursing homes," the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The outlet initially reported that Abramowitz was also representing Cuomo in matters related to the recent allegations of sexual harassment lodged against him, but backtracked on that reporting hours later.

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday said her office was moving forward with an independent investigation into allegations that Cuomo sexually harassed two former aides, and kissed one without her consent.

Cuomo on Sunday issued an apology saying he was “truly sorry” if any comments he made were “misinterpreted as unwanted flirtation,” but said he “never inappropriately touched anybody, and I never propositioned anybody, and I never intended to make anyone feel uncomfortable.”

In his apology statement, the governor said he backed the independent investigation.
