NEWBURGH, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A man died after his car broke down on the Newburgh–Beacon Bridge and he fell through a gap while trying to get to safety, state police said Thursday.

LISTEN TO 1010 WINS

The victim, Paul Montenero, 29, was driving on the bridge, which spans the Hudson River between Newburgh and Beacon, on Tuesday night when his car became disabled in traffic in the eastbound lanes.

Montenero tried to get to the pedestrian walkway of the bridge, presumably because he felt it would be safer there, but he fell through a gap between the roadway and the walkway, according to police.

The bridge is 135 feet above the Hudson at its highest point, though it’s unclear exactly where on the span he fell from.

Officers arrived at the scene shortly before 10 p.m.

The Orange County Technical Rescue Team located Montenero’s body in a recovery effort that involved the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and the Newburgh Fire Department.
