NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York state's hospitalizations quickly jumped past 6,100, with nearly 1 in 5 positive COVID-19 tests, Gov. Kathy Hochul's office said Tuesday as the state continues to endure a battle against an omicron surge.

Hochul's office said 6,173 patients were hospitalized for COVID-19 on Tuesday, an 647 increase since Monday — nearly a 12% rise.

Hochul urged New Yorkers to get tested, vaccinated and boosted ahead of Friday's New Year's Eve festivities and expected gatherings.

"Let's start by celebrating New Year's safely this weekend. Before visiting friends and family, please get yourself tested and make sure you are vaccinated and boosted, if eligible, she added. "Please remember to wear a mask when gathering with others. If we all do what's right, we can make 2022 a very different year from the hardships we've had to endure so far."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday reported that nearly 30% of New Yorkers have not completed a full vaccine series, per Hochul's office. Close to 100,000 vaccine doses were administered statewide in the last 24 hours.

As of Tuesday, nearly 1,000 people remained in the ICU and 518 patients were intubated. 77 people across the state died.

New York City continued to dominate positive COVID-19 cases on Monday with 27,774 positive infections out of the over 40,000 statewide.
