NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — As New York state's hospitalizations are up 86% over the past month, Gov. Kathy Hochul's mask mandate is set to go into effect on Monday.

The statewide order, which will require masks to be worn in all indoor public places that aren't subject to a proof-of-vaccine requirement, will last until Jan. 15, when the state will reassess it.

However, some people at the Staten Island Mall on Sunday had some mixed feelings on the looming mandate.

Mike, a shopper at the mall, told 1010WINS that Hochul's order was appropriate to help stop the lingering threat of COVID-19 even with all precautions taken.

"I think it's a good idea," he added. "Even if you're vaccinated, you have your booster. Whatever we can do to protect ourselves is good, is fine with me."

However, another shopper said they're not happy about wearing a mask at all.

"I think if you're vaccinated, what's the point?" Pat told 1010WINS.

On ABC News' "This Week" Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said masks continue to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

"Masking is not going to be forever, but it can get us out of the very difficult situation we're in now."

Hochul said Friday that the mandate is vital amid "this time of uncertainty" and to ensure the health of New Yorkers and the state's economy are protected.

"I don’t want to go back ever again to that place where people couldn’t go to their jobs safely, couldn’t congregate, kids couldn’t go to schools," she said. "That isolation had a devastating effect on the human condition, and we’re still dealing with the fallout today."

The governor's office said a violation of any provision of the measure is subject to all civil and criminal penalties, including a maximum fine of $1,000 for each violation.
