United flight 1080 was turned back toward Dulles when it was over North Carolina. The plane was met by Metropolitan police and fire officials on the runway and more authorities were waiting when it taxied to the gate, United said.
The disruptive passenger was removed from a back door after extra firefighters were called in to help. The person was taken off the plane on a stretcher and transferred to a local hospital.
The ordeal took about an hour and the flight continued on to San Jose afterward, the airline said.
Further details were not immediately available about the passenger, the behavior that caused the disruption or potential charges.
