
NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A heat wave will continue to grip the New York City area into the weekend, but cooler temperatures are on the horizon.
The city's first heat wave of the summer scorched the region again Friday, with temps in the 90s and RealFeels over 105 degrees, ahead of another sultry day on Saturday.
Most of the Tri-State is under a Heat Advisory until Saturday night, including all five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester, the Hudson Valley, Connecticut, North Jersey and the Jersey Shore. Central Jersey is under an Excessive Heat Warning.
An Air Quality Alert is also in effect for the New York area Friday.
The high hit 91 in Central Park on Thursday and then 93 on Friday, with the humidity and blazing sun making it feel closer to 110 in the afternoon, according to AccuWeather.


The heat wave will linger for a third day on Saturday, when the high will be 92 with RealFeels of around 103. It will otherwise be cloudy with showers and potentially severe thunderstorms around in the afternoon.
Officials have been urging residents to be extra careful in the life-threatening heat. Many pools and beaches have extended their hours, and hundreds of cooling centers are open through Saturday in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. NYC has issued a Code Red Alert to provide shelter to anyone experiencing homelessness.


Con Edison is monitoring the heaviest load on the grid so far this year to avoid power outages in the city. The utility has urged its customers to limit their energy use between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The brutal conditions will move out Sunday as cooler air moves in from the north and brings highs down to the low 80s. The humidity will also drop.
The pleasant weather will continue into next week, with highs in the low or mid 80s most days.
