NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- New York City’s heat wave smoldered into Monday, with humid highs set to surpass 90 into Tuesday before thunderstorms rock the area mid-week and bring much-needed relief.

A heat advisory is in effect for most of the Tri-State—including New York City, Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley and most of New Jersey—until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

New York City opened cooling centers across the five boroughs through Thursday to help New Yorkers beat the heat. A map of them can be found at NYC.gov.

Highs were forecast to reach about 93 degrees in the city Monday, but humidity was pushing RealFeels to around 100, according to AccuWeather.

A slight breeze won’t help much, nor will evening thunderstorms, as temps will only drop to the low 80s overnight.

It’s still very hot and humid on Tuesday, when the high will be 94 with RealFeels around 105. It will otherwise be partly sunny with a chance of an afternoon storm.

Some areas of the city have been in a technical heat wave—three or more consecutive days of 90-degree heat—for nearly a week, including LaGuardia Airport, where temps have topped 90 since last Tuesday.

Other areas are just entering a heat wave Monday. Among them is Central Park, which got a minor respite from the heat last Wednesday and Friday, when highs dipped to 89.

The heat wave breaks—but the humidity sticks around—on Wednesday and Thursday. Highs both days will be about 86 with RealFeels in the mid 90s.

A couple of heavy thunderstorms on both days could produce flooding downpours and potentially damaging wind gusts.

The humidity finally lowers Friday, when temps will be about 83, ahead of a dry and seasonably warm weekend.

Highs should stay in the low-to-mid 80s through next week.
