HISTORIC HEAT RETURNS: Friday high shatters another record in NYC; air quality alert in effect

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Another heat record fell in Central Park on Friday as summer-like temps made an encore and air quality deteriorated.

The high reached 88 in the park around noon, shattering the record of 85 set 82 years ago on April 14, 1941.

The high climbed to 90 with a RealFeel temperature of 100 at 2:30 p.m.

A 46-year-old record was also broken in Central Park on Thursday as the high reached 90—one degree above the previous record of 88 set in 1977.

Friday marks the third day of 80 or 90-degree temps in the city. The average highs this time of year are in the low 60s.

Winds were lighter Friday, worsening air quality from the city up to the Catskills.

The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert until 11 p.m. for the five boroughs, Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley.

A cold front will start to push the heat out of the Tri-State overnight Friday. The low will dip to 63 in the city.

It's cloudier and much cooler Saturday with a couple of showers around, mainly in the afternoon and early at night. The high will be 66.

Showers crop up again Sunday morning and on Sunday night. It's otherwise cloudy with a high of 65.

Monday will be mainly cloudy with a chance of showers and a high of 63.

Highs drop to the 50s Tuesday and Wednesday before a warmup brings them back to the 70s to finish the week.
