Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman told WCBS 880 that a snowplow operator found the woman in her car with the windows down in Uniondale.

"She was unresponsive, she was cold, frigid. He called 911. The police arrived and they pronounced her dead at the scene," Blakeman said.

A cause of death has not been released, but Blakeman said it appears the woman suffered a heart attack or other catastrophic health event and was unable to get out of her car to get help due to the weather.

"That seems to be what they think happened, but we won't know until an investigation is completed," Blakeman said. "But obviously if her windows were down, there was some reason for that."

Authorities have not released the woman's name or age.

Blakeman said the incident illustrates how dangerous conditions are outside and is urging the public to remain indoors for the duration of the storm.

"Only the most essential workers should be on the road," Blakeman said. "Stay inside, keep warm and protect your families. If you do have to go out, check on your neighbor, especially if they're elderly, to make sure that they're okay. But there's really no reason to be outside and we want to keep everybody safe and let our county workers do their job."

Blakeman said Nassau County is experiencing wind gusts of up to 45 mph and as much as 16 inches of snow is possible before the storm moves out late Saturday.
