Justin Verlander has continued throwing while the inflammation from his teres major strain has gone down, and the reigning American League Cy Young winner believes he will make his Mets debut before the end of the month.
“I think that’s very reasonable,” Verlander said of an April return. “We haven’t put a timeframe on it, but I would definitely suspect that.”
Verlander continued throwing even after being placed on the IL with the injury, and told reporters when it was first diagnosed that he would be pitching through the strain had it been the postseason or critical regular season games down the stretch. So, the injury never seemed severe by any means, and with three weeks still left in April, Verlander seems confident that he will be ready to take the mound before that time is up.
“That would be probably worst case in my mind,” Verlander said of not being ready by the end of April. “Well, worst case would be being stupid and reinjuring it, but I think that would be a very slow build from here.”
