DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Cowboys tight end Blake Jarwin underwent hip surgery at the end of February, and his chances of being ready for the start of the 2022 season are in doubt, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday.
According to the report, Jarwin had a rare procedure for an NFL player and he's expected to miss the next several months while the organization deliberates his future on the roster.
Dallas could place him on the Physically Unable to Report list or they could elect to release him and save around $2 million of his owed $4.5 million salary in 2022.
Jarwin signed a three-year, $24.25 million extension after posting 31 catches for 365 yards and three touchdowns in 2020. He played in all 16 games in his first two seasons but only appeared in nine games over the past two years due to a torn ACL in 2020 and hip pain in 2021.
The player who stepped up while Jarwin was sidelined, Dalton Schultz, is a free agent this offseason and is expected to command a strong market. Per Gehlken, Dallas wants Schultz back. But how much would it cost them?
According to 105.3 The Fan's Bobby Belt, Dallas could place the franchise tag on Schultz at a cost of $10.9 million, or they could attempt to work out a long-term agreement. A new contract for Schultz would likely fall in the range of Jonnu Smith's four-year, $50 million dollar contract he signed with the Patriots last offseason.
Meanwhile, Dallas has met with multiple tight ends at the NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis.
Per Belt, the Cowboys have had a formal conversation with Coastal Carolina's Isaiah Likely, and had informal visits with Michigan State's Connor Heyward and Texas A&M's Jalen Wydermyer.
