DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys had a light practice at The Star in Frisco on Wednesday as they prepare for an opportunity to clinch the NFC East on Sunday.
Here are some notes from Cowboys headquarters from Wednesday:
1) With COVID cases surging across the NFL, the Cowboys are playing it cautious and conducting their meetings virtually this week.
“We don’t have to do this,” Head Coach Mike McCarthy said on Wednesday. “We're trying to get in front of it.”
McCarthy acknowledged the team did a poor job with the virtual format last season, and was quick to credit Dan Quinn with helping to improve their process in 2021.
McCarthy also noted how much more they’re able to do this season with the over video conference.
“The WebEx is better.
They’ve improved what we need as far as the interfacing, the DV Sport (software the team uses for film) was night and day compared to how we do it now to then.
So, I mean, the whole process is better.”
2) McCarthy provided a couple of updates on OT Tyron Smith and TE Blake Jarwin.
McCarthy said the team was “hoping” Jarwin could begin doing on-field work next week or the week after.
Jarwin has missed the last seven games due to a hip injury that he suffered against the Vikings.
Smith was with the rehab group at practice on Wednesday, but McCarthy said he’s “much better than he was last week.”
Smith has missed four game this season, including last week against the Giants with a nagging ankle injury.
3) Wednesday was a light practice for the Cowboys, but DE DeMarcus Lawrence and RB Tony Pollard spent the portion open to the media working on resistance cords with rehab director Britt Brown. Both Pollard and Lawrence were listed as limited on the practice report with foot injuries.
S Donovan Wilson, who recently had his IR practice window activated, opened practice with team physical therapist Hanson Yang.
4) Several Cowboys fans on social media have asked recently about 2nd round pick Kelvin Joseph, who has had a largely anonymous rookie campaign.
During the team stretching period, Joseph was standing behind the stretching line with Mike McCarthy and Dan Quinn. The three had an extended talk that concluded at the end of the period. Joseph then joined the defensive backs for field work.
5) There’s been some discussion about CeeDee Lamb’s drop issues, and Lamb wasn’t making any excuses for it when speaking to the media on Wednesday.
"Just dropped balls.
No excuses. I just gotta focus up, focus on the ball. Small details,” Lamb said.
Lamb rejected the idea that a glare from the sun or his visor was the cause of at least one of his drops against the Giants.
“I’m not even gonna blame it on the sun. That’s me. That’s all me.”
With a chance to clinch the NFC East at home on Sunday, Lamb said he was excited, and praised Cowboys fans for how they’ve shown up this season.
“Cowboys Nation, they know how to travel. They travel very well on away games, and I know them home games they’re always rocking,” Lamb said. “I just can’t wait to see what it looks like.”
