DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Cowboys have waived kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, leaving Brett Maher as the only kicker on the roster, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reported on Tuesday.

The Cowboys were required to cut the 85-man roster down to 80 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT.

Dallas also cut linebacker Christian Sam (waived/injured), tight end Jeremy Sprinkle (injured), wide receiver Jaquarii Roberson and cornerback Quandre Mosely.

The decision to move on from Hajrullahu comes two weeks after the team signed Maher and moved on from undrafted free agent kicker Jonathan Garibay, following his struggles to make kicks throughout training camp.

The two kickers battled over the last couple of weeks, but, as expected, the Cowboys preferred to keep the player with the stronger leg in Maher.

Hajrullahu connected on his 35-yard field-goal attempt against the Chargers on Saturday, while Maher was just short on his only attempt from 61-yards out.

It's no guarantee that Maher will be the team's kicker when the Cowboys take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the season opener on Sept. 11. Dallas will likely survey the open market when teams cut down to their final 53-man rosters on Aug. 30.
