DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - It's not a matter of if but when the Cowboys will restructure quarterback Dak Prescott's contract this offseason.
It was virtually guaranteed the organization would flip a switch with Prescott's contract, as they put two void years at the end of his six-year, $164 million deal, with the final year not having any money attached to it.
Restructuring Prescott would give the Cowboys as much as $15.1 million in cap relief. They could choose to restructure a smaller portion of his $20 million salary in 2022, but they might as well maximize the savings given the empty void year at the end of the deal.
Prescott's entire $31 million salary for 2023 becomes guaranteed on March 20, which would boost the fully guaranteed money remaining on Prescott’s deal from $20 million to $51 million. That would give Dallas some greater flexibility to free up money next offseason, but wouldn’t be available as part of a restructure in 2022.
