Broaddus: Odell Beckham Jr. would put Cowboys 'step for step' with Eagles

The Odell Beckham Jr. sweepstakes are heating up. OBJ reportedly will be medically cleared by the end of the week and it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s signed shortly thereafter.

The Dallas Cowboys have emerged as a contender for the talented wide receiver. Jerry Jones said that he envisions Odell Beckham Jr. with a star on his helmet and Micah Parsons also pitched OBJ on the Cowboys.

Bobby Belt and former NFL scout Bryan Broaddus of the Audacy Original Podcast “Love of the Star” talked about what OBJ would bring to the Cowboys and how they’d match up against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Go get Odell Beckham because he’ll go get the football,” Broaddus said (13:08 in player above). “Who on this team goes and gets the football? Who runs those dangerous inside routes and goes and snatches the ball on the fly and takes off running?”

The Cowboys have a solid receiving group headlined by CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, but OBJ would add another dimension to the offense.

“You haven’t had a guy on that team to go and snatch a ball since Dez Bryant was here last, just comes flying across the middle knowing bodies are all over the place, reaches his hands out, doesn’t let the defender get on behind him and knock the ball down,” Broaddus continued. “This guy’s a bad ball catcher. That’s what he is. You can throw a ball anywhere, this guy’s catch radius – we’ve seen it first hand.”

The veteran wide receiver played six games in Cleveland and eight games with the Los Angeles Rams last season. He caught a touchdown in five of those Rams regular-season games and was even better in the playoffs.

“That’s why he’s a difference-maker, because when it gets tough and it gets tight he will go get the football. I don’t know if you have guys like that on this team,” Broaddus said. “That’s why Jerry Jones, Mike McCarthy’s interested in this cat, and a lot of other teams are willing to make him a part of their team for maybe two months, three months. Maybe. Because he is a difference-maker. That’s why people still like this guy. He did it in the Super Bowl. This guy’s a difference-maker.”

Beckham suffered an ACL injury in the Super Bowl, but not after catching two passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. He’s a player that can make a difference.

How much of a difference? Well, adding OBJ could help the 6-2 Cowboys catch the 8-0 Eagles in the NFC East, or at the very least help them in a possible playoff matchup.

“If they have a healthy Odell Beckham it puts them right there step for step” with the Eagles, Broaddus said. “I feel like the Eagles and the Cowboys are pretty similar. Their quarterback has played much better than I even thought he would. The biggest difference going into the season between Dallas and Philadelphia wasn’t the rosters. It was the quarterback, in my opinion. I felt like you had the better one. Right now? We’ll see.”

The Eagles beat the Cowboys 26-17 with Cooper Rush starting back in Week 6.

“Now, I’ll say this, you went toe-to-toe with them with a backup quarterback and three turnovers. And that game came down to a chance at the end. If your defense gets a stop that final drive then maybe you got a shot,” Broaddus said. “Adding Odell Beckham gives you the ability to go after a strength of the Philadelphia Eagles and that’s their pass defense, and that’s there secondary. That gives you a weapon against Slay and those guys that they have over there.”

The Cowboys and Eagles are set for a rematch on Christmas Eve in Philadelphia in Week 16 of the season.
