The Dallas Cowboys might be operating under the impression that Cooper Rush will be their starting quarterback against the Eagles on Sunday Night Football, but meanwhile Dak Prescott continues to make important progress.
Prescott is still rehabbing right thumb, which he fractured in Week 1 of the season. He continues to progress well, and he took a noteworthy step Thursday when he was considered a limited participant in practice on the injury report. It's the first time he was a limited participant since the injury, and he was considered a “did not participate” one day earlier.
Asked about Prescott on Friday in his weekly appearance on “Shan and RJ”, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy shed some light on what Prescott did during Thursday’s session.
"He bounced out of the rehab and actually, frankly, just took a couple reps in the individual drills, which put him into the limited category," McCarthy said. "But he’s doing well. The last two days he hit the target as far as the rehab and the throwing, and we were just trying to give him some full-speed work with the perimeter guys.
"So we did that after practice and did some things in the quarterback school. Today will be a recovery day for him, because I know he probably did a little more than we anticipated yesterday. So, we’re on schedule. He’s getting better."
For a while now, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that what they’re looking for with Prescott is how he spins the ball when he throws it. Because of where a plate was inserted in his thumb, the bone doesn’t actually need to be fully healed in order for him to return.
Because of that, the eye test is important. McCarthy didn’t want to tip his hand when asked if Prescott was spinning it.
The ball spins when he throws it, yes,” McCarthy quipped.
Friday is the last time teams have to submit an injury report prior to game day, so there should be at least one more update on the quarterback before the weekend hits.
