DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Cowboys did not just field one of the poorest defenses in the NFL last season, they fielded one of the worst defensive units in the 51-year history of the franchise.
Obviously needing a major overhaul in that department, that defense underwent some significant changes this offseason, with former Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn being named as the team's new defensive coordinator, and significant turnover occurring throughout that side of the roster.
On Thursday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media for the first time this offseason, detailing what he feels really went wrong with the Dallas defense in 2020.
McCarthy of course is referring to the drastic overhaul the defense saw last season under then defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who is known for his defenses being on the more complicated side of things.
Also, however, McCarthy noted the disadvantage of not being able to meet in person with his players during that time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Still, the main issue with the Cowboys defense was without a doubt its lack of talent on that side of the ball.. particularly in the secondary, where Dallas had one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL.
So how will the Cowboys fix that issue? Simple, according to McCarthy -- through the NFL Draft.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we take some defensive players in the draft," McCarthy said.
The Cowboys are set to pick with the No. 10 overall selection this April.
