DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Former Jets & Dolphins executive Mike Tannenbaum joined the GBag Nation on Wednesday to discuss the latest on the Dak Prescott contract situation.

NFL Network reporter Jane Slater came on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday and said she wouldn't be surprised if a deal doesn't get done this week between both sides.

Should the situation play out that way, Tannenbaum says he'd be concerned that a deal might never get done.

"I think we're really on the precipice of this getting done, or it's really over. Because, in my opinion, if they don't get something done by March 9 (deadline to franchise tag players), then I just don't see a path to getting something done," Tannenbaum said. "And, here's why, with the cap going down, and no one really knows where we're going to be in terms of the cap, let's just say Dak's franchise tag is going to be 20 percent of the cap. And, if that's the case, it's really going to prohibit them from getting other things done. Most notably, this is a team that has a lot of needs on the defensive side of the ball. They're going to want to try and get a long-term deal done, lower that first-year cap number. Hopefully, if I'm Dallas, down to $31 to $32 million. When I do that, it allows me to actively hold onto some other guys (Cowboys free agents). ... "That's not to say they can't get a deal before July 15, but if I'm Dallas, the best time to get that deal done is before free agency."

But, what if they don't get a deal done before the draft in April? Should they draft his replacement?

"They absolutely have to draft Dak's replacement. If they don't get a long-term deal done, he's walking out the door at the end of this year. Because if you tag him at $52 or $53 million (next season), that's prohibitive. So, they absolutely have to know that he's going to (leave) in a year.

"In talking to a number of teams around the league, there are very few quarterbacks (in next year's draft). Right now, there's one, Kedon Slovis of USC, that has a first-round grade in 2022. Because of that, you really want (to draft) a guy this year and develop him, so that when Dak leaves you're ready to go."
