NFL Insider: Cowboys taking Kyle Pitts wouldn't be smart

The idea of Kyle Pitts as part of a group of pass catchers on the Dallas Cowboys that would also include Michael Gallup, Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb is scary. However, it's fair to question if selecting Pitts - should the opportunity present itself - would make sense given the current roster structure that Jerry Jones and company have.

With that in mind, Mike Florio said on PFT Live Monday that he doesn't believe it would be wise for the Cowboys to select the former Florida tight end.

"One of the things that popped up last week, Jerry Jones [is] "infatuated," reportedly, with Kyle Pitts. My theory is that we know about that because there are members of the Cowboys organization that don't want Kyle Pitts, so they're trying to make sure that he's gone before the Cowboys would take him instead of a defensive player, where they have a much greater area of need. I know Kyle Pitts is a hell of a prospect, but when you've got Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup...and you've got all the money paid to Dak Prescott...the idea of taking Pitts if he falls to you at 10, which he likely won't...or trading up, giving up assets to go get Kyle Pitts, that seems like a reach. But it definitely seems like something that Jerry Jones would be capable of doing."

To be clear, Florio was not suggesting that taking Pitts at 10, or even a few picks higher, would be a reach in terms of value, but rather a luxury pick for a team with much more pressing needs.

It is true that the Cowboys have much greater needs defensively, as evidenced by the fact that they were the 28th-ranked unit in 2020. In addition to holes at cornerback and on the defensive line, there's a strong case to be made for the Cowboys using the No. 10 pick on an offensive lineman, especially given that neck injuries have prevented former All-Pro Tyron Smith from playing all 16 games in a season since 2015.

At the same time, if Pitts is a generational talent and you have the opportunity to take him, it would be hard to pass on that, especially if you believe that in five years he'll be a significantly more accomplished player than anyone else you could take. Certainly, it would be more crucial for the team's chances of winning in 2021 to find an impact defensive player or offensive lineman, but there's a very real possibility none would make a bigger impact than Pitts in the short or long-term.

Fortunately - or perhaps unfortunately, depending on your perspective - Pitts may not even get to within Jones' reach. In our latest NFL Mock Draft, Pitts is taken by the Atlanta Falcons with the No. 4 overall pick. That said, is there a scenario where the Falcons take a quarterback at No. 4, the Cincinnati Bengals take an offensive lineman at No. 5, the Dolphins select a wide receiver at No. 6 and the Detroit Lions select either a wide receiver or cornerback at No. 7? It's maybe not likely, but also not impossible. And if Jones sees a path to Pitts, all bets may be off.
