DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Mavericks were able to outlast the short-handed Lakers 115-110 on Thursday night, but the win was overshadowed by the unfortunate loss of big man Kristaps Porzingis to an ankle injury.
Porzingis was cutting to the basket on a Luka Doncic score late in the third quarter when he appeared to roll his ankle.
KP was able to walk off the court under his own power, a sign that the Mavericks might have dodged a bullet. He was eventually ruled out for the rest of the game with an ankle injury.
After the game, Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle provided a positive update on Porzingis, saying that while they are "uncertain" on the severity of the injury, they are not ruling him out of Saturday night's rematch with the Lakers at the American Airlines Center.
"We're hoping it's not too severe. I don't think he's been ruled out for Saturday yet," Carlisle said. "He is walking. He’s not in a boot or anything.”
Porzingis might need an MRI to determine the severity of the injury but the Mavs hadn't determined yet if that was necessary after the game.
The win was massive for the Mavericks in the standings as they are now tied with the Portland Trail Blazers for the sixth seed in the Western Conference, the final spot that avoids the dreaded play-in game.
Dallas can only hope to continue to get positive updates on Porzingis as their quest for the No. 6 seed would take a massive blow if he were to miss significant time with 14 games left to play.
