The Rangers continue to look for ways to upgrade their bullpen, and their latest effort to do just that is coming from within the organization.
Texas is promoting hard-throwing reliever Alex Speas from Triple-A Round Rock to the big-league club and is optioning John King back to Triple-A. To make room on the active roster, the Rangers designated Taylor Hearn for assignment.
Speas, who was out of baseball last year to focus on his personal life, has been dynamite in the minors this year. In 28 appearances between Double-A Frisco and Round Rock this season, Speas is 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA and a 0.972 WHIP. The right-hander has 59 strikeouts and 15 free passes.
Texas selected Speas in the second round of the 2016 Draft out of a Georgia high school.
Hearn, who started the Rangers' home opener last season, has had a decent season with the Express, pitching to a 3.66 ERA in just over 39 innings of work.
