DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Rangers fans, we know things aren't going very well for the big league club as they dropped their eighth game in a row on Wednesday night. But let me take this opportunity to bring a little bit of joy to your day.
Cole Winn, the Rangers 15th-overall pick in the 2018 draft, is absolutely dealing right now at Double-A Frisco.
Over his last four starts for the RoughRiders, Winn has allowed six hits and nine walks to go along with a 0.39 ERA and 26 k's in 23 innings of work, per Zach Bigley.
In last night's start against Amarillo (D'Backs affiliate), Winn dazzled in his six shutout innings, allowing just one hit and three walks, while striking out seven.
In his previous start, Winn allowed no hits in six innings of work.
With Winn continuing to dominate in Double-A, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get called up to Triple-A Round Rock at some point in the near future. But what about a call-up to the big league club?
The reality is Winn is still just 21-years-old. He didn't pitch last season because the minor leagues were shut down due to COVID-19. So it's likely that the club will want to protect him at all costs.
Should he get called up to Triple-A and continue to dominate? The Rangers will surely have to strongly consider it. Especially when it's likely that they will have dealt Kyle Gibson and possibly other rotation arms to other contending teams.
My best guess? They'll let him continue to flourish in the minors this year and give him every opportunity to win a spot in the rotation out of camp next spring. But it will definitely be something to keep an eye on this summer.
