(670 The Score) Cubs manager David Ross is no stranger to what the vibe is like leading up to an MLB trade deadline.
In addition to his 15-year playing career, Ross also guided the Cubs through a frenzied stretch last July, when the organization traded off veteran after veteran to recoup value before those players hit free agency. The exit of core players marked an organizational shift for the Cubs, who are once again in line to be sellers ahead of the Aug. 2 trade deadline as they sit at 34-52 entering play Tuesday.
With that as context, what does Ross plan to say to his players leading up to this trade deadline?
“Nothing, nothing,” Ross said on the Bernstein & Holmes Show on Tuesday afternoon. “I think none of us have answers until there’s something concrete. And dealing with that last year and going that experience, you got to understand it’s part of the game. There’s nothing that I can control or they can control. We have to continue to put our heads down and go to work every day. I don’t think that’s something that I try to focus on. It’s about getting better every day, and the guys that are here have done a really nice job of that, and we’ll continue to do that before and after the deadline.”
Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is expected to be traded, as contract extension talks have failed to progress with him in the final season of his contract. Closer David Robertson is another prime trade candidate.
