Pirates decline $11 million option on Chris Archer

Chris Archer

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) The Pittsburgh Pirates continue their off-season moves by declining pitcher Chris Archer’s $11 million option, letting him go to free agency.

The 32-year-old pitcher will hit free agency after missing the entire 2020 MLB season to relieve symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome.

Archer, a two-time All-Star wit the Tampa Bay Rays, recorded a 6-12 record with a 4.92 ERA in 33 starts with the Pirates.

The Pirates traded pitcher Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Austin Meadows to the Rays to acquire Archer during the 2018 season.

While Archer was mostly a disappointment with the Pirates, both Glasnow and Meadows both became important pieces to the Rays’ run to the 2020 World Series.

The right-handed pitcher will receive a $250,00 buyout to complete a contract he signed in Tampa Bay during the 2014 season, originally guaranteeing him $25.5 million.
