The Matt Murray era is over in Pittsburgh.
On Wednesday, just as the NHL draft was kicking off day too, the Penguins sent Murray to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forward prospect Jonathan Gruden and the Sens 2nd round draft pick in this year’s draft.
That pick will be the 52nd overall and will give the Penguins a total of five picks on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old Murray is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion and was protected over Marc-Andre Fleury in the Vegas expansion draft.
“We would like to thank Matt for everything he’s done in his five seasons with the Penguins,” said Rutherford.
“He was instrumental to our back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships, and we wish him the best.”
The Senators general manager Pierre Dorion says Murray will be a great addition to Ottawa.
"The acquisition of Matt Murray represents an important addition to our lineup," said Dorion. "He's a proven goaltender who has considerable high-pressure experience and someone who we're certain will serve as a exceptional mentor to our young group of upcoming goaltenders. "
Murray has a lifetime safe percentage of .914 but posted .899 last season.
The Penguins will have control of Gruden through the 2022-23 season and will make an average of $788,333 a year.
20-year-old Gruden played last season in the Ontario Hockey League as a member of the London Kinights.
He played in 59 games, scoring 30 goals along with 36 assists for 66 total points.
Gruden is 6 feet ball and weights 172 pounds.
