PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Without a freshman signee for the coming season, Pitt landed its first basketball recruit on Friday.

Midland native and Lincoln Park grad Nelly Cummings is returning to Western Pennsylvania as a graduate transfer. He was named First-Team All-Patriot League at Colgate this season. The 6’ guard averaged 14.7 points with 3.4 assists and 3 rebounds a game. He shot 36% from three and 82% from the foul line.

Pitt Head Coach Jeff Capel got a good look at him as the Panthers hosted Colgate on December 9 and Cummings had 17 points.  It wasn’t the only good game he had against a Power Five school, Cummings nearly led Colgate to a win over Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament.  The Badgers won by seven, but Cummings played 34 minutes scoring 20 points, six rebounds and six assists against one of the better defensive teams in the country.

He started his career at Bowling Green before transferring to Colgate for three seasons scoring 1,003 points with the Raiders after 109 with BG.

Cummings was three-time an all-state selection at Lincoln Park scoring 2,411 points in his career.  He also played on Pitt great Curtis Aiken’s AAU team and described as athletic, smart, plays hard and on top of all that, a good kid.

Pitt still has six open scholarship positions for next season.
