PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Optimism was an oft-used word by Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk on Thursday including with shortstop Oneil Cruz.

Cruz remains on the injured list after ankle surgery, but the other day on his own ran his 75-foot toss out to 90-feet. That may not seem like a big deal, but he did it on his own (under supervision) which shows to the team that he’s gaining confidence, strength and range of motion.

“We view it as optimistic because it’s tough to hold these players back sometimes,” Tomczyk said. “It’s a very encouraging sign that he’s feeling better-the inflammation, the range, all that stuff is getting better.”

They are still projecting a four-month return to action for Cruz, it’s not specified if that means to baseball activities or a return to the active MLB roster in four months. Tomczyk said that four-month mark, which would be an August 9 return, is still a moving target based on his progress. But everything so far has been good with Cruz, but there was emphasis they don’t want to impact his long-term health.

Ke’Bryan Hayes

Went on the injured list on Wednesday with low back inflammation, it’s the same issue Hayes was having last year. Tomczyk said Hayes was trying to fight through it but they met and decided it was better for him to get some rest and treatment. They do believe they have a better strategy to limit his activity now on non-baseball days. Again saying they won’t rush him short-term to potentially affect his career, but think he will be back soon.

Bryan Reynolds

The Pirates outfielder did some hitting on Thursday and Tomczyk said he is making progress and they are optimistic Reynolds will be back in the lineup in the next couple of days.

Ji Man Choi

The Bucs first baseman homered in his first AAA rehab game on Wednesday night. Pirates say he’s had no issues working back from a left Achilles strain, he just continues to build up game tolerance and more game activities. Derek Shelton said earlier this week they want him to get a number of reps at first base before being recalled.

Colin Holderman

The Pirates set-up man came out ‘quite well’ of a bullpen simulated game. Doctors are currently having conversations with the coaches and staff about what is next for the right-hander. It sounds like his return is imminent.

Wil Crowe

Right-handed pitcher continues to progress from a right shoulder issue as he is throwing live batting practice at the team facility in Bradenton.

Travis Swaggerty

The Pirates 2018 first-round pick could do some baseball activities next week. The centerfielder has dealt with a myriad of issues in professional baseball, the latest being a viral illness that has sidelined him since April. He’s been limited to 74 at bats this season at AAA Indianapolis.
