PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates GM Ben Cherington said he wants to see multiple pitchers get opportunities to start in the last couple of months of the Pirates season. Some of those didn’t pitch last year or are reaching career-innings marks.

How do you get a look without risking injury?

Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk says he is working day-in and day-out to try to figure out the correct amount of opportunities for every pitcher.

“It’s the million-dollar question and we don’t have all of the answers,” Tomczyk said.  “We are trying to learn every day from them.  We go off a three-pillar approach-how they are preparing, how they are training and how they are recovering.  The recovery part is probably most important.”

“We collaborate with our informatics, with our player development, with our performance team, our medical team, our pitching department and notably the individual and the player.”
