PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates used their competitive balance pick Sunday to improve their pitching depth. Bucs select 21-year-old college right-hander Thomas Harrington.
The 6’2”, 185-pounder was a walk-on and became the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year in 2021 at Campbell University. He went 6-3 as a freshman with a 3.45 ERA and last year 12-2 with a 2.53 ERA, 111 strikeouts to 18 walks. The dozen wins a school record and led all of NCAA. Harrington named a D1Baseball All-American and performed well against the better competition in his career.

“Harrington's heater will range from 90-93 mph on some days and 93-96 on others, but it regularly misses bats with its run and carry,” according to MLB.com. “His best offering is a mid-80s changeup with tumble that elicits swings-and-misses in and out of the strike zone. He'll flash a plus mid-80s slider with depth, though it comes and goes, and he also has a show-me curveball in the upper 70s.”
“A quality athlete who also played quarterback in high school, Harrington repeats his low three-quarters delivery well and pounds the strike zone. He has a projectable 6-foot-2 frame and continues to get better, showing good feel for sequencing his pitches to keep hitters off balance. A Draft-eligible sophomore, he offers one of the higher floors in the 2022 college pitching crop, as well as the ceiling of a No. 3 starter.”
