Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins has died after being hit by a car on Saturday morning.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that he learned of Haskins passing through his agent Cedric Saunders.
On Friday, Haskins posted to his Instagram story confirming that he was in Boca Raton, Florida working out, after an invite from recently signed quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
Several of his offensive teammates were on hand for the workout as well.
Haskins was a standout at Ohio State University, starting just one season but broke Big Ten records and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.
In 2018, Haskins threw 50 touchdowns completing 373 passes out of 533 attempts for 4,831 yards.
Washington picked Haskins 15th overall in the 2019 draft, but the young quarterback struggled and along with some off field issues, was released at the end of the 2020 season.
In 13 games started in two seasons with Washington, Haskins went 3-10 with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with a passer rating of 74.4.
The Steelers signed Haskins to a Future/Reserve contract in 2021 and spent most of the past season on the Steelers’ scout team.
Haskins talked about how much he appreciated being signed by the Steelers during mini camp last year.
“Just coming here to Pittsburgh, I just wanted to prove to the coaching staff and my teammates how much I love football.” he said. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity to be here and just showing that my mind’s in the right place and I’m willing to work to be able to show my talents and work to earn a spot here.”
Haskings married his wife, Kalabrya Gondrezick-Haskins, in March 2021.
The 24-year-old Haskins would’ve turned 25 on May 3.
