PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Never as an amateur golfer had Matt Vogt gotten up at 3:45 in the morning for a tee time. It wasn’t just any occasion as he was the first player off to start the 10th US Open at his former employer Oakmont Country Club. How did it go?

The first tee shot he pulled over the first fairway into the left rough of the ninth hole that runs parallel. He would hit a spectacular shot to par and then par number two. It was much tougher from there on, finishing with a 12 over, 82.

“Honestly, I came in with such optimism for this golf course, but it is so hard,” Vogt said Thursday. “It is so, so hard. In the moment, you feel like you get punched in the face. Ultimately, I would say it was fun.”

Vogt admitted its disappointing to play poorly, joking he’s trying to have a silver lining on finishing near the end of the leaderboard. What makes it so tough, and he knows this having been a caddy at Oakmont Country Club, one bad shot on a hole sinks you. It’s so penal.

He said he’s tried to use his platform to glorify God and use his experience to help inspire others. He’s also not just going to sleep this away and play it out Friday.

“It would be easy to go take a nap and say that was awful and just mope,” Vogt said. “But I’m just going to get something to eat, work really, really hard and try and build on something.”
