Two years ago, Ben Simmons watched his team get swept from the NBA playoffs by the Celtics, and took to Twitter to let the world know he never wanted to feel that pain again.
Fast forward to Monday night, and Simmons watched his team get swept. By the Celtics. In the first round.
With the only difference being the team he represented, Simmons’ self-revealed nightmare came true again with the Nets’ game four loss to Boston in Brooklyn on Monday, as the Celtics completed the sweep just as they did to Simmons’ 76ers in August of 2020 in the bubble.
Simmons missed that 2020 playoff series with a knee injury, and watched his team from outside the bubble. He was expected to play in game four to try and keep Brooklyn’s season alive, but instead, his back flared up the day before the game, and he wasn’t with the team at the Barclays Center when the Nets season came to an end.
Naturally, his tweet from August of 2020, when he said “Watching my team get swept hurt, and I don’t ever want to feel that way again,” was quickly dug up and used as more trolling ammunition on Twitter almost immediately after Boston completed the sweep.
What made it truly ironic was a reply to Simmons' tweet from a Nets fan back in 2020, urging Simmons to come to Brooklyn and assuring him that a sweep would never happen again. It didn't take long for it indeed to happen again.
