It's very possible Zach Ertz played his last game in an Eagles uniform on Sunday against Washington. If it were up to him, however, that wouldn't be the case.
"I don't know," said Ertz when asked about whether he will be an Eagles in 2021.
"I want to be here. From an individual standpoint, I don't know if I can answer that."
An emotional Ertz ended his press conference wiping away tears at the thought of it.
“I think this city is the best city to play for. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. This city means a lot to me. It means a lot to me. I’m thankful.
Despite the rough year and regardless if he returns, Ertz will go down as the greatest tight end in Eagles history after eight highly productive seasons with the franchise.
The year was a tumultuous one for the veteran tight end. Ertz had his lowest amount of receptions since his rookie season and averaged less yards per target than any other season. After entering the season in the middle of a contract dispute, Ertz said that he had the mindset that it could be his final year with the team. Reports surfaced in late October that the team was willing to trade him before he landed on injured reserve with a minor injury.
The failed contract negotiations and trade rumors haven’t muddled Ertz's relationship with Howie Roseman, indicating his conversation with Roseman before the season was blown out of proportion.
"I'm not going to be bitter," said Ertz when asked what the Eagles will do moving forward.
