You can’t always trust Wikipedia as the best source of unbiased info…but we’re going to go ahead and say this one works:
Yes, in case you can’t see it that well, someone edited Howie Roseman’s Wiki page to read “Part-time magician and master of all the draft” after he traded for D'Andre Swift and moved up to select Georgia CB Kelee Ringo in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Howie probably got the first part from a combo of the salary cap machinations of Jalen Hurts’ deal and the Swift deal, and the latter is, of course, after selecting three members of Georgia’s all-time great 2021 defense in the first 105 picks of the 2023 Draft.
Of course, think about this, as well: on the first two days of the Draft, Howie used three 2023 picks – Nos. 10, 62, and 94 – and two picks in 2024 (a fourth and a fifth) to end up with No. 9 (Jalen Carter) and Nos. 65 and 66 (Alabama OL Tyler Steen and Illinois S Sydney Brown), and pick up Nos. 188 and 230 as well.
Then, on Saturday, he traded a 2024 third to move up to No. 105 to get Ringo, sent a 2025 fourth and swapped picks in the seventh with Detroit to get one year of Swift, and then ended up with a 2024 fifth after trading Nos. 230 and 240 to the Texans for No. 191 and dealing that pick to Tampa Bay for the 2024 selection.
So, in essence, Howie did everything he did over the course of the Draft, and likely upgraded the Birds’ 2024 fifth-rounder, all for what amounts to a 2024 third, a 2024 fourth, and a 2025 fourth.
Oh, and if Swift leaves after one year, the Birds could get a compensatory pick in 2025, so that fourth-rounder could come back even higher if Swift has a great season.
Remember when Howie didn’t know how to navigate the Draft? Yeah, neither do we.
