“Money is nice, championships are better.”
You heard Jalen Hurts’ first press conference as the highest-paid player in NFL history live on WIP Monday morning, and you’ll hear more from him with Marks & Reese on WIP Monday afternoon.
But, in that press conference, when asked about his comments at the Super Bowl and how satisfying being the highest-paid player in the league is,
“This is not an arrival point, it’s just a stop in the journey,” Hurts said. “The journey continues, with what we want to accomplish as a team. I have mixed emotions; I’m grateful and thankful, but I’m just so hungry. The hard work continues, and the fire continues to burn. I play this game because I truly love this game, and I hate to lose. In a team sport, you get gratification from putting that work in with someone else, and that’s what’s made this so special in my three years being here, and that’s the precedent we set for
The presser came three years to the day that Hurts was the No. 53 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, a curious selection given the Eagles had just paid Carson Wentz a ton of money the previous summer.
As it turns out, three years later, Wentz is gone (and about to be on his fourth different team in four years), there’s a new coaching staff, and of the six 2020 selections who played key roles in the Eagles’ Super Bowl run last season, none was bigger than Hurts.
“Three years ago, Mr. Roseman and Mr. Lurie had the courage to draft me when no one really understood why,” Hurts said, “and I think just to have the opportunity to grow into the young man that I am today…I couldn’t have done it in another place, and I can’t imagine doing it any other way.”
