Nick Sirianni joined Angelo Cataldi after the Eagles' 38-35 season opening win over the Detroit Loins, where A.J. Brown had 10 catches for 155 yards in his Eagles debut and Jalen Hurts threw for 243 yards and rushed for 90 more.
On the defense's performance allowing 35 points and 386 yards
"They went down and they scored on the first drive. We wanted to weather the storm in every aspect of this game. They get a fast start, we had a punt he first drive as well. And then the defense really settled in. They forced three three and outs in a row and then got a pick six. My talk with the defense is like, 'Hey let's get some stops here.' We felt like they couldn't stop on offense. 'We're gonna get a lead and you're gonna play with a lead the rest of the way.' And that's precisely what happened. The defense allowed us to get that lead. Now, we didn't finish good as we all know. We've got to clean up a lot of things on defense, as far as the run game and some of the things like that, but we'll get those things corrected. It's always better to fix them after a win than after a loss."
On A.J. Brown's huge Eagles debut
"We always want to use our playmakers as much as we can. The role of the three guys—DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, and Dallas Goedert—the pass game will always run through those guys...The beauty of having those three guys is you can't take them all away at once. Then you have some other good weapons with Quez and Kenny and Miles. The way it went yesterday we fed the hot hand and he was rolling. He really showed how much quickness and play strength he has and that to me is the secret at wide receiver in this league."
On Jalen Hurts scrambling a lot
"Give credit to that defense. I think the o-line really dominated in the run game. What happened was at times when we were running was, they were bringing one more than we can protect and sometimes team sell out and say I might not be able to beat the one on one matchups we have...Teams do a good job of disguising that. If you don't see that and one comes free, that's what you gotta do is run. Do I want him to take some of those hits that he took? No. But I think some of those hits that he took were unnecessary too and the refs called it."
On Monday night's 2022 home opener vs. Vikings
"That's one of the reasons why you want to coach football and why you want to play football. Monday night football...I can't wait to see our fans out there supporting us and being so loud. It's the Vikings. I remember there was a pretty special game here back in 2017, Vikings vs. the Eagles in the NFC Championship. [Jonathan] Gannon still talks about it, about how loud it was, and how intense it was, and how much the home field advantage meant in that one because he was on the other side there with the Vikings."
