The preseason is finally over.
That is the good news following the Eagles preseason finale against the New York Jets on Friday night, a 31-31 tie that moved their record to 0-2-1 in the preseason.
So who helped or hurt their chances of making the roster on Friday night?
Here is a look at whose stock is up, whose stock is down:
STOCK UP:
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside: Arcega-Whiteside has looked like an improved player throughout training camp and that continued on Friday night. Arcega-Whiteside made one of the most impressive plays he has made in an Eagles uniform against the Jets, pulling in a pass from Flacco, shaking off two defenders and bringing it into the end zone to complete a 42-yard touchdown catch. Arcega-Whiteside has outplayed Travis Fulgham and showed on Friday night why he should make the roster over him.
Boston Scott: We saw very early on Friday night why Nick Sirianni is going to be using Scott a ton in the passing game this season. Scott caught a short pass from Joe Flacco and took it 49-yards for the touchdown on the opening drive of the game, badly juking one Jets defender in the process. Scott had the best hands of any running back on the team in camp, and although Miles Sanders will be the starter, Scott is going to be getting plenty of targets this season.
Kenny Gainwell: Scott wasn’t the only Eagles running back that helped himself on Friday night. Gainwell carried the offense on the second drive of the game, totaling 47 yards on six touches and bringing it in from five-yards out. Like Scott, Gainwell is going to be involved in the offense in Week 1.
Brett Toth: The Eagles started the game with their backup offensive line, which was (from left to right) — Andre Dillard, Brett Toth, Nate Herbig, Sua Opeta and Jack Driscoll. Of the five, four (Dillard, Opeta, Herbig and Driscoll) seem to be locks to make the team. Toth starting at guard, considering they have tried him at tackle as well, is interesting. Perhaps he is a player the Eagles could keep through first cuts instead of risking him to waivers -- or perhaps the Eagles view him a backup offensive linemen that can play multiple positions.
Tarron Jackson: Jackson made an excellent play against the run in the second quarter, bursting through two defenders to bring down Jets running back Michael Carter for a two-yard loss. Then, in the final minute of the game, he stripped the ball away from Jets quarterback James Morgan. Jackson has had a strong showing in the preseason games overall, and that continued on Friday night. Jackson likely isn’t ready to play in the regular season, but he made a strong case to make the roster this preseason.
STOCK DOWN:
Micheal Jacquet: Nick Sirianni said prior to the game on NBC10 Philadelphia that players would be winning or losing jobs on Friday night. If that is the case, Jacquet likely lost his job. The Jets went after Jacquet on the first drive and he couldn’t do anything to stop them, giving up a touchdown from two-yards out. Jacquet played the entire game, which is a very bad sign no matter how you slice it. The Eagles like Jacquet, and his strip fumble at the end score him big points with the coaches, but at this point he will almost certainly make it through waivers and onto the practice squad.
Matt Pryor: Pryor has been with the team for three seasons and wasn’t out there as a starter in the final preseason game. That is a very bad look for Pryor, who at this point in his time with the Eagles should be a starter or a valuable backup — not coming in as a backup in the last preseason game. Pryor played into the second half and got flagged for a penalty in the third quarter that negated a positive play. The Eagles desire to always go heavy along the offensive line could save Pryor, but his roster spot might be in more trouble than it was at the beginning of camp. Toth starting over Pryor is a very bad sign for Pryor's chances of making the team.
Travis Fulgham: Jalen Reagor, Quez Watkins and Greg Ward started the game, which was surprising considering all three will likely be getting a ton of snaps in Week 1. After Reagor left the game it was John Hightower who was the first receiver into the game, ahead of Travis Fulgham. It is possible the Eagles just wanted to see more of Hightower since he is on the bubble — or Hightower is head Fulgham on the depth chart and will be making the team over him. Fulgham didn’t get into the game until towards the end of the second quarter and didn’t get a target when Joe Flacco was in the game. His night got worse when he finally made a catch in the fourth quarter -- but then fumbled the ball away. His roster spot has been in trouble for weeks and it looks like there is a real chance he might not make the final roster.
Andrew Adams: Howie Roseman normally strikes out on an early signing in free agency. In past years he has missed on linebackers, but this year that miss seems to be Adams. Adams was signed to potentially be the starter next to Anthony Harris while Rodney McLeod was out, but he has been working almost exclusively with the backups during training camp, and that continued on Friday night. Adams played into the fourth quarter and didn’t help his case for making the team, missing multiple tackles he should have made. Adams doesn’t even seem to be in the conversation for a roster spot.
