Alec Bohm had a short yet promising rookie season last year. He finished runner-up in NL Rookie of the Year voting and lead the Phillies with a .338 batting average. At the plate, he was fantastic. At third base, however, it was a different story.
The chatter quickly became that Bohm was destined to move across the diamond to first base at some point in his career, but the second-year slugger sees himself long-term as a third baseman.
"You tell an athlete that they can't do something, they are always going to try and prove you wrong," said Bohm on the Marks & Reese Show on Tuesday afternoon.
"They will always have a bit of an ego about it."
It's part of the work ethic Bohm has when approaching third base. The 24-year-old slowly improved over the short 60-game season last year and has impressed teammates with his defensive strides in spring training.
"For me, I've never had a doubt that I can do it. I also knew I needed to get better. I wasn't naïve about it, I knew there was a lot of room to improve. I just put my head down and went to work at it. I feel a lot more comfortable over there and think the game has slowed down for me a lot on defense. I'm just looking forward to doing my part on that side of the ball this year."
