The Phillies are hot, winning nine of their lat 11 games, but they still trail the Giants by two games for the last National League Wild Card spot.
While we still have over a month to debate what moves Dave Dombrowski should make at the trade deadline, Joe Giglio tossed out a suggestion this morning on WIP Daily:
Trade for Paul Goldschmidt.
"Adding Paul Goldschmidt would almost be like brining back Rhys Hoskins, but 30-percent better or so at the plate and world's better in the field," Giglio said.
Goldschmidt, the reigning NL MVP, is enjoying another stellar season, posting an OPS+ of 138 and hitting 11 home runs. Despite his success at the plate, the St. Louis Cardinals have struggled in June, going 2-10 and dropping to last place in the NL Central.
It would probably take quite a haul to land the seven-time All Star, but the Cardinals are interested in adding young pitching to their system and the Phillies could build a package around Mick Abel or Griff McGarry.
Goldschmidt is under contract through the 2024 season.
