The Juan Soto-Phillies rumors have come out of no where. And Joe Giglio is intrigued, so much so, that he says he would offer the San Diego Padres Trea Turner for Soto right now.
"I don't want to wait. I want to go get him now," Giglio said on Friday's 94WIP Midday Show.
Soto took a plane back to Philadelphia from the All-Star game in Seattle with the Phillies, as the Padres begin a four-game set at Citizens Bank Park tonight. Furthermore, according to Jon Heyman, the Phillies are the frontrunner to land Soto in 2025 free-agency period.
"I want to offer the San Diego Padres Trea Turner in a trade today," Giglio said, laying out three reasons why.
"Number one, the Padres are realizing they are not going to be able to sign Juan Soto. So I think at some point, and they're not in a playoff spot right, they may trade him.
"Number two, in free-agency last year, the Padres actually had the highest offer to Trea Turner. So they really like him.
"This is a two birds, one stone idea in my head. The Phillies can acquire Juan Soto, one of the greatest young hitters of all-time. Put him in left field...And the other aspect of why I want to do this, is it gets them out of the Trea Turner contract."
Phillies fans on social media were not pleased with Giglio's trade proposal.
Turner, 30, has struggled in his first season as a Phillie after signing a mega 11-year, $300 million contract with Philadelphia this past offseason.
Turner is slashing just .247/.299/.389 with 10 HR and 32 RBI. Turner has a -0.4 Win Probability for Offensive Player advance metric, which is the first time in his career that number has been a negative one.
On June 1st, Giglio ripped Turner calling him "one of the worst 20 players in baseball."
