Steph Curry is on the shortlist of NBA greats.
Everyone’s top 10 or top 15 is subjective, but the Warriors living legend continues to etch his name in the pantheon of all-timers. For his latest act, Curry became the first player in NBA history to ever drop 50 points in a Game 7, as the Warriors dispatched the pesky Kings with a 120-100 victory.
On 95.7 The Game’s “Steiny & Guru” Monday afternoon, host Matt Steinmetz made a bold claim about Curry’s greatness.
“He’s the best offensive player I've ever seen,” Steiny told co-host Daryle ‘The Guru’ Johnson. “He's better than Michael Jordan, offensively, he's better than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, offensively. He actually might be more unstoppable than Jabbar. What this guy does is unbelievable. The idea that a player 6-foot-3 can draw two defensive players beyond the top of the circle to allow his teammates to essentially play 4-on-3, I’ve never seen anything like it.”
LeBron James – who awaits Curry in the second round – recently passed Kareem as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. The 7-foot-2 center’s unstoppable skyhook is a stark contrast to the 3-pointers and wild drives Curry is able to finish.
“When you double-teamed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the double team happens in the lane, which clogs things up,” Steiny said. “When Steph Curry gets doubled-teamed, it opens things up. Not only for him when he doesn’t get double-teamed, but all his teammates.”
Jordan led the league in scoring 10 times and averaged 30.1 points per game throughout his 15-year NBA career. Curry is averaging 24.6 points per game through 14 regular seasons and is already the all-time 3-point king (3,390).
“Michael Jordan maybe would have been more effective in this era but he didn’t get to play in this era, Steph Curry did. What he did yesterday just absolutely, positively vintage. It’s Bird, it’s Magic, it’s Kareem, it’s Jordan. It’s all the greats rolled into one. He saved the Warriors’ season and maybe – maybe – the dynasty.”
