Steve Kerr isn’t tired of winning championships.
The Warriors coach joined 95.7 The Game’s “Steiny & Guru” live from Chase Center on Monday to discuss his one-of-a-kind NBA career arc and more.
Kerr, 57, is about to enter his ninth season with the franchise as it goes for a repeat. They've played a lot of extra postseason basketball over the year, but the thought of retirement doesn’t occupy much space in his mind.
“Does that sound that great, to just wake up and not have anything to do?,” Kerr told hosts Matt Steinmetz and Daryle “The Guru” Johnson. “It sounds great for, like a month, and then what?”
“You’d find something,” Steiny said.
“You a big golfer?” Guru asked.
“I like golf, Kerr said. “Maybe once a week would be great, but I dunno what I’d do the other six days. I love what I do. I love coaching. I love being part of a team. And I get to coach this team. It’s not like I’m coaching a team that isn’t any good. I’m coaching a bunch of champions.”
Kerr has nine rings, including the three-peat with Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and two more with the San Antonio Spurs dynasty. The other four rings have come with the Warriors since taking over in 2014.
Guru plays basketball at 24 Hour Fitness, so he had to know what it’s like for Kerr to have so much hardware.
“More than anything, I just sort of shaky my head and say, ‘How the hell did this happen?,’” Kerr said. “Honestly, I didn’t even think I was gonna make the NBA coming out of college. I thought, if I could just play for a year, just so I could say I played in the NBA, how cool would that be?”
Thirty-four years later, Kerr is on the mission for ring No. 10.
