Michael Irvin is a firm believer that the 49ers decision to keep Jimmy Garoppolo to back up Trey Lance will work for all parties involved.
The Hall of Fame wide receiver joined 95.7 The Game’s “Damon & Ratto” Thursday to show his support for the move, which he called, “a perfect, perfect play out for both of those guys." Check out the full interview below:
“I put San Francisco right now second in the NFC because they kept Jimmy Garoppolo,” Irvin told hosts Damon Bruce and Ray Ratto. “You really do probably have the best backup in the NFL. Nobody has the backup position well-covered more than San Francisco.”
As for his top dog in the conference? He’s going with the Super Bowl champs and NFC West division rival Los Angeles Rams.
Despite the potential for awkwardness in the transfer of power under center, Irvin thinks Garoppolo and Lance’s laid-back personalities won’t lead to a controversial situation.
“I do not believe you guys are in danger in any of that,” Irvin said. “The transition, Deebo (Samuel) and those guys are gonna be there for Trey.”
Irvin has a close relationship with Deebo, so he probably has a good pulse on how the 49ers wide receivers are feeling. Irvin said he and Samuel chatted recently since the wide receiver signed a three-year extension with the 49ers.
“He looks happy and ready to go. I was happy for him. We laughed,” Irvin said. “He’s in good spirits.”
