Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin joined 95.7 The Game's “Damon & Ratto” Monday to give his impressions of Christian McCaffrey, Jimmy Garoppolo, Deebo Samuel and the 49ers offense going forward.
Irvin said he was impressed with the way McCaffrey showed off his receiving skills on his touchdown grab as part of Sunday’s rare touchdown trifecta against the Rams. Beyond that, he thinks CMC will make Jimmy G’s job a whole lot easier.
“With Christian McCaffrey, it makes me more peaceful about Jimmy G at quarterback,” Irvin told hosts Ray Ratto and Damon Bruce. “With Christian McCaffrey, now any dump down pass has a chance of doing something.”
McCaffrey rushed the ball 18 times for 94 yards, hauled in eight catches for 55 yards and threw a 34-yard TD dime, totaling 27 touches on the afternoon. Though the 49ers will want to monitor McCaffrey’s workload given his injury history the previous two seasons, Irvin thinks CMC deserves the ball that much on a weekly basis.
“I believe what Christian McCaffrey gives is perfect for what Jimmy Garoppolo does,” Irvin said. “It helps with faith in him. You can see 25 touches. I think he should see about 25 touches a game, to be honest with you.”
McCaffrey and Deebo played together in CMC’s 49ers debut against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 but the running back was just 48 hours into his tenure and didn’t have a full grasp of the playbook. Samuel sat out Sunday’s contest with a hamstring injury but Irvin thinks he should be a huge benefactor of McCaffrey’s presence when he returns, possibly in Week 10 after the team's bye.
“Wait til Deebo comes back,” Irvin said. “Now the first person they focus on will be Christian McCaffrey. Deebo wants that. Deebo will be taking off when he’s back on that field. It’ll be an incredible sight to see both of them on the football field.”
