Perhaps a break for the Mets in Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader: Giants starter Alex Cobb left the game with a right groin injury in the fifth inning.

With one out and two on in the bottom of the fifth, Cobb started to run towards first base on Jeff McNeil’s grounder down the first-base line; the ball ended up going down into the right field corner for a two-run double, and Cobb pulled up after a few steps and stopped, grabbing at the inside of his left leg.

Before Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader, the Giants placed Cobb on the 10-day injured list, promoted Yunior Marte from AAA and named utility man Luke Williams as the 29th man for the doubleheader.

Cobb had to cover first base quite a bit in the first four-plus innings, including two batters earlier when a Travis Jankowski grounder to first went from potential double-play ball to 3-6 force at second to fielder’s choice, J.D. Davis ruled safe at second after replay review.

After the McNeil double, Cobb was tended to by trainers on the field and quickly removed, leaving the Giants bullpen to scramble, and was eventually replaced by Dominic Leone, who retired Starling Marte before giving up a game-tying double to Francisco Lindor.

Cobb has thrown just 60 pitches to that point, so it was a big blow to a staff that now must get at least four innings out of its relief corps in Game 1, not to mention whatever they may need behind Logan Webb in Game 2.

The Giants’ staff had an MLB-best 2.20 ERA entering play Tuesday, although Cobb had allowed a two runs in five innings in his first start and was charged with a final line of four runs in 4 1/3 innings in this game.
