Every week, Christine and Salt interview the Badass Woman of the Week, celebrating women who've conquered challenges and emerged stronger. The honoree receives an empowering B Badass bracelet from The Power to B and is showcased on-air Fridays at 7:15 AM with Christine and Salt.

Meet Sherry DeGenova, our Badass Woman of the Week and the lifesaving force behind Kenway’s Cause.

Sherry DeGenova has dedicated her life to saving animals as the president and founder of Kenway’s Cause, a nonprofit organization devoted to animal welfare in Hartford, Connecticut. Since its founding in 2011, Kenway’s Cause has been a beacon of hope for injured and abandoned animals, stepping in with life-saving medical care when no other options exist.

Changing Lives, One Animal at a Time

Before Kenway’s Cause, injured strays in Hartford often faced euthanasia due to the lack of immediate medical care. Today, Sherry and her team provide emergency surgeries, x-rays, ultrasounds, and other treatments, giving countless animals a second chance at life.

Their work extends to helping adoptive families and rescue organizations, offering financial assistance for medical conditions or behavioral challenges in animals from the Hartford Animal Shelter. They also tackle Hartford’s stray cat population through TNR (trap-neuter-release) programs, finding homes for friendly cats while humanely managing feral colonies.

Kenway’s Cause also supports Hartford pet owners in need, providing supplies, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and medical aid to ensure pets stay healthy and loved.

The Heartbreaking Story That Started It All

The inspiration for Kenway’s Cause came from a tragedy that changed Sherry’s life. In 2011, she was called to a scene near railroad tracks where she found a neglected, emaciated dog in a garbage bag, barely alive. Sherry named him Kenway, meaning Brave Warrior. Despite her efforts, Kenway didn’t survive, but his courage inspired Sherry to create a lasting legacy in his honor.

Since then, Kenway’s Cause has saved countless lives, ensuring no animal faces the same fate as Kenway.
