Everyone who’s flown on a plane knows weighing your luggage is standard protocol, but what about stepping on the scale yourself?
Travelers flying on Air New Zealand will have to do just that, as the airline is now asking passengers to weight themselves before they board the plane on international flights.
Per NBC DFW, Air New Zealand says it wants to weigh 10,000 passengers during a monthlong survey so their pilots can have more clarity on the weight and balance of their planes before takeoff.
Alastair James, a load control improvement specialist for the airline, said in a statement, “We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft — from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold. For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey.”
James said passengers had nothing to fear if they decided to fly on Air New Zealand.
“It’s simple, it’s voluntary, and by weighing in, you’ll be helping us to fly you safely and efficiently, every time," he said.
Air New Zealand says the survey began this week and will run through July 2.
