All charges levied against Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust have been dropped.
Baldwin was facing two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting, which occurred in October 2021.
Baldwin was reportedly practicing a cross-draw when the gun fired, striking Hutchins and director Joel Souza, who suffered a non-life-threatening injury.
Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, said in a statement, “We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident.”
Per CNN, special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis cited “new facts” regarding the case as their reason for dropping the charges.
The pair said they could not “proceed under the current time constraints and on the facts and evidence turned over by law enforcement in its existing form.
“We therefore will be dismissing the involuntary manslaughter charges against Mr. Baldwin to conduct further investigation,” their statement continued. “This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled.”
Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, and as of Thursday those charges remain the same.
