As many were heading for safer ground in Florida, convoys were leaving the Chicago area, heading south to help with recovery.
About 100 ComEd workers packed up Tuesday and headed south, answering requests for help from power companies anticipating what’s to come. This has happened with previous hurricanes and the utility companies have a well-established process. The workers making the trip volunteered for the duty.
About 150 contractors from the Chicago-area were also heading south to assist with power restoration, as Hurricane Ian was approaching.
Also, the Anti-Cruelty Society and other animal rescue and adoption organizations are preparing to bring animals here from shelters in impacted areas, to make room for an expected influx of animals.
PAWS Chicago has done this since Hurricane Katrina, taking animals from shelters that will need the space in the coming days.
